Help With Your Prescription

Your prescription may look something like this:

Prescription terms

Sphere (Sph) The sphere power of your prescription represents whether you are long or short sighted. If it is negative (-) you are short sighted (myopic); if it is positive (+) you are long sighted (hyperopic). The values are given in increments of 0.25. The higher the value, the stronger the lens. It can be a zero value (written as 0.00, 'plano' or the symbol ∞).

Cylinder (Cyl) The cylinder value of your prescription represents whether you have an astigmatism. This value is written in increments of 0.25 and can be expressed with either a negative (-) or a positive (+) value. If you do not have any astigmatism, then there will be no value in this column. If you do have a value for the cylinder, then you must also have a value for the axis.

Axis The Axis is the direction of the cylinder and is measured in degrees between 0° and 180°. It is usually written as a simple number, i.e. without the degree symbol (°).

Add This value will only be present on your prescription if you need reading glasses.

Pupillary Distance (PD) This measures the distance between your pupils. It is needed to centre the prescription lenses in front of your eyes to provide the most accurate vision. It can be written either as one value or may be expressed as a separate value for each eye (eg R PD; L PD).

Date of Prescription This must be less than 2 years old. If you have not had your eyes tested within the last two years, you will need to have a new eye test before you can purchase prescription eyewear.

Glossary

Anti-reflection coating This is a coating applied to the lens which gives superior glare reduction and maximises visual clarity.

Astigmatism This is a very common condition where the eye is rugby-ball shaped instead of football shaped.  Astigmatism can occur in both long and short sighted people.

Polarised lensesPolarised lenses have corrective filters to block glare given off shiny surfaces, eg on water or wet roads, improving vision in strong light.

Polycarbonate lenses These lenses are ultra lightweight and virtually shatter proof. They have a very high degree of impact resistance which makes them ideal for sports use.

Presbyopia This is where the internal lens of the eye loses its ability to focus on near objects as it ages. It usually occurs from the age of 40 onwards, when reading glasses will be needed.

Rx This is a shorthand term for prescription
